Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma faced charges of treason, misprision of treason, and harbouring in connection with his alleged role in the failed coup attempt on November 26th, 2023. Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, Bail Granted Under Strict Conditions.

The Ministry of Information and Civic Education shared an update on the court proceedings at Magistrate’s Court No.2, Pademba Road.

Magistrate Santigie Bangura oversaw the case, formally presenting the charges to the former President. Following this, a bail application was promptly submitted in the High Court due to the Magistrate’s lack of jurisdiction.

Judge Samuel O. Taylor, after careful consideration, granted bail with specific conditions. These conditions include limiting individuals at Dr. Koroma’s residence to a maximum of 10 people at any time, comprising his wife, children, lawyers, and political party members. Additionally, the former President is barred from leaving his residence without explicit permission from the Inspector-General of Police.

During this period, only the National Chairman and National Deputy Chairman of Dr. Koroma’s political party are permitted to visit, with all visits subject to approval by the Inspector-General of Police. To further secure bail, two senior citizens residing in the Western Area of Sierra Leone must act as sureties.

The legal proceedings are adjourned until January 17, 2024, allowing the state time to prepare and present witnesses. This crucial moment in Sierra Leone’s political landscape highlights the gravity of charges against the former President and potential implications for the nation.

The severity of the accusations, including treason, signals a thorough examination of Dr. Koroma’s alleged involvement in the attempted government overthrow. As the legal process unfolds, both the nation and the international community will closely observe the events and their impact on Sierra Leone’s political stability.

While the granted bail provides temporary relief for Dr. Koroma, allowing some freedom under stringent conditions, it prompts questions about the political implications and public reactions to charges against a former head of state.

Sierra Leone, historically marked by political turbulence, now treads a delicate path between justice and political stability. The outcome of this case is poised to have far-reaching consequences, shaping the country’s political landscape and trajectory in the coming months.
