Emmanuel Müller, the outgoing European Union (EU) Ambassador to Sierra Leone, officially bid farewell to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in a ceremony held in Freetown on Friday.

In his remarks, Ambassador Müller expressed his gratitude for the collaboration with the SLP, particularly commending Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu for his unwavering support during critical periods, including the recent elections.

“I remember the election time; your line was always open and responsive to calls, which was very helpful,” Ambassador Müller stated, reflecting on his working relationship with the police chief.

IGP Sellu, in his farewell message, praised the Ambassador for his dedication and urged him to continue advocating for Sierra Leone even after his departure. “Now that you are leaving, I ask that you take Sierra Leone along with you. Wherever you have the opportunity to put a word for Sierra Leone, please do,” IGP Sellu said. He emphasized the importance of the EU’s support, particularly in initiatives like the West African Police Information System (WAPIS), INTERPOL, and cybersecurity, which have significantly enhanced the SLP’s global standing.

IGP Sellu assured the outgoing Ambassador that the SLP would maintain a strong relationship with the EU, regardless of leadership changes. He noted that the security situation in Sierra Leone had improved since the elections but identified ongoing challenges with cybercrime, stressing the need for investment in security as a foundation for national development.

In response, Ambassador Müller reassured the gathering that the EU’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone would continue, despite his departure. He expressed his affection for the country and its people, promising to carry the memories of Sierra Leone with him as he returns to Germany. Müller, who has been an advocate for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls throughout his career, will return to Berlin for a new posting in 2025 after a brief stay in Germany.

The ceremony concluded with the SLP expressing their appreciation for Ambassador Müller’s contributions during his tenure and looking forward to continued collaboration with his successor, who is expected to arrive on September 1, 2024.
