The European Union, in partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone and private sector stakeholders, has officially inaugurated the European Chamber of Commerce in Sierra Leone (EuroCham SL), marking a significant milestone in strengthening trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Sierra Leone and Europe.

EuroCham Sierra Leone is expected to serve as a key platform for European businesses operating in the country. It aims to foster dialogue, promote investment opportunities, and support the creation of a more enabling environment for sustainable private sector growth.

The inauguration ceremony was held alongside the 3rd Public-Private Dialogue, which brought together government officials and business leaders to discuss reforms and opportunities to drive economic development and enhance the country’s investment climate.

In his opening remarks, the President of EuroCham SL, Hans Christopher Wursche, welcomed the Chief Minister, the Minister of Trade and Industry, and other distinguished guests. He outlined the vision of EuroCham, emphasizing its role in strengthening collaboration between European investors and Sierra Leone.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Alpha Ibrahim Sesay, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to its partnership with European stakeholders, describing it as a top priority. He expressed gratitude to the EuroCham founding council and the visiting delegation, while also acknowledging the vital role played by both European and Sierra Leonean business leaders in making the dialogue meaningful and productive.

He stressed that the dialogue is rooted in the fundamental belief that the private sector is the engine of growth, and that government and businesses must work together as partners rather than engage only in times of crisis. According to him, the platform provides an opportunity to openly discuss successes, challenges, and areas for improvement, ultimately helping both sides achieve their objectives.

As a government, we are committed to creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. A critical element of that environment is engagement, and this platform provides that engagement for all of us,” he said.

The Minister further emphasized that Sierra Leone is open for business, noting that the government is determined to ensure that commitment is realized. He encouraged European companies to invest in the country, create jobs, and transfer skills, assuring them of a responsive government and a reliable partner in EuroCham.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of President Julius Maada Bio, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh underscored the longstanding relationship between Sierra Leone and the European Union, built on trust and mutual respect for both national and international laws.

Addressing participants at the dialogue, Dr. Sengeh highlighted the importance of combating misinformation, stating: “It is our responsibility to debunk fake news. With misinformation, it is our responsibility to stop it before it spreads. Fifty years of partnership cannot be undermined by perceptions and allegations.”

He reaffirmed that the relationship between Sierra Leone and the EU is grounded in cooperation, dialogue, and development, rather than fear, rumors, or threats. He further stressed that safeguarding this partnership is a shared responsibility among government, the private sector, and EU member states.

Dr. Sengeh concluded by assuring investors and partners that Sierra Leone remains a safe, secure, and attractive destination for investment.

The launch of EuroCham Sierra Leone is expected to further deepen economic ties, strengthen investor confidence, and create new opportunities for growth and collaboration between Sierra Leone and Europe.
