The European Union (EU) Delegation to Sierra Leone has officially launched a commemorative campaign marking 50 years of diplomatic and development cooperation with the West African nation.
The milestone, spanning from 1976 to 2026, was inaugurated during a press launch hosted by the Delegation in Freetown, celebrating five decades of partnership since the EU first established its presence in the country.
The high-profile briefing brought together key members of the international diplomatic corps and senior government officials. EU Ambassador Jacek Jankowski hosted the event alongside the ambassadors from EU member states, including Ireland, France, and Germany.
The Government of Sierra Leone was represented by the Honorable Kenyeh Barlay, Minister of Planning and Economic Development.
During the briefing, officials highlighted the core achievements of the long-standing alliance, noting that decades of joint initiatives have directly contributed to sustainable development and improved livelihoods across Sierra Leone. Key areas of impact discussed included:
Infrastructure & Economy: Long-term investments in structural development and economic stabilization.
Governance & Social Services: Sustained support for democratic institutions and the strengthening of public service delivery.
Agriculture & Education: Programs aimed at boosting food security, rural development, and human capital.
Reflecting on the golden jubilee of the partnership, Ambassador Jankowski reaffirmed the EU’s long-term commitment to the nation, emphasizing that future cooperation will remain robust and forward-looking.
Jankowski stated that the EU aims to further strengthen its collaboration with Sierra Leone to foster inclusive growth and sustainable development, ensuring that all future interventions remain closely aligned with the Government of Sierra Leone’s national strategic priorities.
