Questions have emerged over the true status of Facebook monetization in Sierra Leone following recent statements from a Meta operations expert showing that important earning features are still unavailable.
On June 25, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh announced that Facebook monetization had been activated in the country. The statement raised hopes among local content creators that they could start earning money directly from their posts, videos, and live streams on the platform.
However, Meta’s Customer Operations Manager, Michael Fullah, has confirmed that in-stream ads, which are the main source of revenue for creators globally, are not currently supported in Sierra Leone. This means creators based in the country do not have access to Facebook’s most reliable and widely used monetization tool.
Other features such as Stars and Subscriptions are available but limited in their impact. Stars allow followers to send digital tips during live streams but many Sierra Leonean creators face difficulties accessing those funds due to limited digital banking options. Subscriptions, which offer monthly paid access to exclusive content, are active but not widely used in the local market.
Fullah also stated that tools like Reels Bonuses and Ad Breaks are still restricted by location and do not include Sierra Leone. These tools play a major role in how creators in other countries earn on Facebook.
While the platform may show some monetization tools as “available” in user dashboards the most profitable options remain out of reach. The announcement by government officials has led to confusion among users who expected full access to Meta’s earning features.
There has been no timeline given for when in-stream ads or Reels Bonuses will be officially available in Sierra Leone.
