The Government of Sierra Leone has announced the start of a nationwide verification exercise for foreign nationals living and working in the country, beginning on June 1, 2026.
The announcement was made in a press release issued on May 25, 2026, by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education on behalf of the Government of Sierra Leone.
According to the notice, the exercise is intended to verify compliance with immigration and labour requirements, including residence permits, work permits, and non-national identity cards for foreign nationals residing in Sierra Leone.
The government stated that the verification exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen national security, improve migration management, and ensure lawful employment practices across the country.
The press release further disclosed that the operation will be carried out by a joint task force comprising the Sierra Leone Immigration Department, the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security, the Unified Permit Secretariat, the National Civil Registration Authority, as well as members of the country’s security sector.
Authorities said the task force will conduct inspections at workplaces, business premises, institutions, project sites, residential areas, and other locations where foreign nationals may be working or residing.
The government advised all employers and foreign nationals to ensure that their immigration and labour documents are valid, updated, and readily available for inspection at all times.
It also warned that failure to comply with the stated requirements could result in penalties or other legal action in accordance with the laws of Sierra Leone.
The notice added that applications, renewals, and regularisation processes for residence and work permits can be completed online through the Unified Permit Secretariat portal at http://unifiedpermit.gov.sl.
For further information, the government directed members of the public to contact the Sierra Leone Immigration Department, the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security, or the Unified Permit Secretariat through the contact details provided in the official press release.
