The Government of Sierra Leone and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) have reaffirmed their commitment to the successful implementation of the Livestock and Livelihoods Development Project (LLDP) following an Implementation Support Mission held in Sierra Leone.

Speaking during the mission, IFAD Country Director for Sierra Leone and Liberia, Pascaline Barankeba, described the partnership between IFAD and the Government of Sierra Leone as strong and longstanding, noting that the collaboration had once again been reinforced through the support mission for the LLDP.

Madam Barankeba commended the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, for what she described as his leadership and continued commitment to the design, launch, and implementation of the project. She noted that the LLDP is a flagship Government initiative officially launched by President Julius Maada Bio in October 2025.

She also praised the LLDP Project Implementation Unit for the progress achieved during the project’s first six months of implementation. According to her, the mission was aimed at providing strategic and technical support, assessing implementation progress, identifying gaps and bottlenecks, and strengthening preparedness for the effective delivery of sustainable livestock-based livelihoods for rural communities, particularly women and young people.

Madam Barankeba stated that the mission came at a critical stage following the official launch of the project and the completion of the start-up workshop. She stressed that the LLDP must now move from being a well-designed project to a well-delivered programme capable of producing tangible impact across rural communities.

She further explained that the multidisciplinary mission team was intentionally assembled to provide expertise across key components of the programme in order to strengthen implementation and increase its impact on the rural economy and livelihoods.

According to Madam Barankeba, the LLDP was designed to contribute to poverty reduction, improve food security and nutrition among rural households, and create increased employment and economic opportunities for rural women and youth.

She called on all stakeholders to strengthen coordination, sustain the current momentum, and accelerate implementation to ensure the successful delivery and long-term impact of the project.

Meanwhile, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to the timely and effective implementation of the LLDP.

He emphasized that the project remains a flagship intervention under the Government’s “Feed Salone” strategy and underscored the need for accelerated implementation to achieve visible and measurable impact before 2028.

The Minister also urged the Project Implementation Unit to ensure the timely delivery of activities aimed at improving livelihoods in rural communities across the country.
