Minister Mohamed Rahman Swaray, representing President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, initiated the reconstruction of the Hockey Pitch at Wilberforce Barracks. This self-help project, led by the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), aims to enhance the military’s infrastructure with an estimated cost of NLe 30 million.
The event unfolded on Tuesday, November 6, 2023, at Wilberforce Barracks, where Minister Swaray commended the Army’s dedication. He assured continued governmental support for capacity-building within the institution, emphasizing President Bio’s commitment to addressing the needs of service members.
Highlighting past initiatives, Minister Swaray cited projects like the Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess, state-of-the-art Forward Patrol Bases, and ongoing work at the 34 Military Hospital. He pledged sustained efforts to enhance soldier well-being and national security.
Deputy Minister of Defence, Col. Muana Brima Massaquoi, expressed joy at the project’s commencement, revealing that the RSLAF Engineering Department, equipped by the Sierra Leonean Government, would oversee its implementation.
Lieutenant General PK Lavahun, Chief of Defense Staff – RSLAF, termed the project a milestone, creating a fitting parade ground for the armed forces. Anticipated for completion in the first quarter of 2024, the Chief thanked contributors, especially acknowledging the government’s financial backing.
The ceremony concluded with Minister Swaray and military dignitaries symbolically turning the sod, marking the commencement of a venture set to elevate the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces’ facilities.
