The National Public Health Agency (NPHA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH). Ministry of Social Welfare (MOSW), and other key stakeholders, has developed a comprehensive plan to ensure the safe return of Hajj pilgrims from Saudi Arabia amidst COVID-19 concerns.

The plan includes continuous engagement with our medical team in Saudi health and the establishment of a Technical Working Group (TWG) involving the NPHA, MOH, MOSW and other key stakeholders to oversee this process

Upon arrival, pilgrims will disembark in staggered groups to prevent overcrowding and undergo COVID-19 screening. Those who test positive or show symptoms will be isolated immediately, while negative and asymptomatic individuals must self-isolate and follow all public health guidelines, including social distancing. There will be a mandatory isolation period of 7-14 days for all positive cases, with another COVID-19 test on days 5-6.

Critically ill individuals will be treated at Lungi Government Hospital. Regular updates on the health status of returning pilgrims and the measures taken will be shared with the public. Pilgrims who test negative after initially testing positive can go home immediately.

An emergency response plan is also in place to manage potential surge cases, ensuring adequate resources, including PPE, testing kits, and isolation facilities are available.
By implementing these measures, Sierra Leone aims to manage the safe return of Hajj pilgrims and minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission, protecting the health of the entire nation.
