The Ministry of Information and Civic Education, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), held a commemorative event on Monday at the Miatta Civic Centre to honor media practitioners who were killed or injured during Sierra Leone’s eleven-year civil war.
Organized as part of the National Remembrance Day Commemoration, the event was held under the theme “Salone Media Dae Memba.”
The gathering aimed to recognize the sacrifices of frontline journalists who provided factual information to the public and the international community during the conflict.
The ceremony was attended by veteran journalists, government officials, and civil society leaders. The venue featured a symbolic empty chair adorned with a white ribbon, representing the journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah addressed the assembly, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to preserving the memory of the war’s media victims. Minister Bah stated that the event reflected President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to ensuring the nation does not forget the sacrifices made by the press.
During the proceedings, survivors and veteran journalists were given the platform to share firsthand accounts of their experiences during the war.
As part of the commemoration, a memorial wall was established at the venue. Media practitioners used the wall to pledge their renewed commitment to the consolidation of peace and national stability.
The Ministry used the occasion to reiterate its commitment to supporting press freedom and protecting journalists. Officials described the event as a call to action for the media to continue fostering accountability and civic education.
