The Inspector General of Sierra Leone Police, William Fayia Sellu, in his keynote address at the 73rd anniversary of Kenema Government Secondary School (KSS), emphasized the critical role of education in nation-building and urged the current generation to strive for academic excellence.
As an alumnus of KSS, IGP Sellu expressed his deep appreciation for the community’s dedication to nurturing future leaders. “What a truly special day this is,” he declared to a crowd of students, teachers, alumni, parents, and guests.
He recognized the significance of the celebration, saying, “This is not simply another event on the calendar. It is a moment of significance, a time to honour 73 extraordinary years of impact.”
Highlighting the legacy of KSS, he stated, “This school has been a guiding light, the place where hope is born, potentials are nurtured, and excellence is the only standard.” He noted that although the school has been in operation for 73 years, “In so many ways, we are just getting started,” encouraging the community to invest in the future.
IGP Sellu underscored the vital contributions of teachers and parents in shaping the school’s success, acknowledging them as “the pillars of our strength.” He challenged the audience to recognize that “nation-building begins in schools like this one,” affirming that before a nation can progress economically, politically, or socially, it must first cultivate a generation that understands responsibility, value, and service delivery.
Emphasizing the continued pursuit of excellence, he urged, “As we mark this 73rd anniversary, we must continue to look ahead to a future rooted in a high degree of excellence.” He pointed to the importance of adaptability in an evolving world, stating, “We must ensure that Government Secondary School Kenema continues to rise to the occasion.”
He also spoke on the holistic development of students, explaining that “From science labs to debate halls, pupils are trained to develop skills that matter in real-world problem-solving, teamwork, discipline, creativity, and emotional intelligence.”
On the occasion, which also hosted the Golden Jubilee of the Kenema Old Students Association (KOSA) in celebration to its 50th anniversary, IGP Sellu praised the association for being “a key external motivator for our pupils.” He encouraged students to draw inspiration from the achievements of past alumni, emphasizing, “Their presence here today should propel you to deepen your commitment to your studies.”
As the event concluded, IGP Sellu expressed hope for continued support from alumni and stakeholders to enhance the educational mission of Kenema Government Secondary School, reinforcing its critical role in building a better future for Sierra Leone.
