The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education has launched an immediate investigation into disturbing allegations of sexual abuse involving an official driver linked to the Free Quality School Education Secretariat in the North-Eastern Region.

The incident, which came to light through social media, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.

According to reports, the driver allegedly sexually assaulted an underaged schoolgirl. Despite the incident being reported to the police, no action was taken. Further allegations suggest that the driver’s superior attempted to interfere, threatening the victim and her mother to silence them.

In a strongly worded statement, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education, Conrad Sackey, condemned the incident and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting children, particularly girls, from violence and abuse.

“Let me be clear: I condemn ALL forms of violence, abuse, or misconduct, especially against children. Protecting our pupils is non-negotiable. Every allegation must be treated with urgency, transparency, and accountability,” Minister Sackey stated.

The Ministry has outlined a series of immediate actions in response to the allegations:

Internal Investigation: An urgent internal investigation has been launched to uncover the facts surrounding the incident.

Police Involvement: The matter has been formally reported to the Inspector General of Police to ensure due process and a thorough investigation.

Support for the Victim: Priority support is being provided to the victim and her family, with their safety and well-being taking precedence.

Zero Tolerance for Intimidation: The Ministry has emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for any form of intimidation or cover-up, demanding full cooperation from all parties involved.

Minister Sackey urged the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of abuse or misconduct in schools through official channels. “This is a stark reminder of why we must remain vigilant. If you have information about abuse or misconduct in schools, SPEAK UP. Your voice matters,” he said.

The Minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that schools are safe spaces for all children. “Every child deserves safety, dignity, and justice. We will not rest until our schools are spaces where girls can learn, thrive, and grow without fear,” he added.
