Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Musa Kabba, on Saturday led an Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) delegation comprising Foreign Affairs and Defence Ministers to Guinea-Bissau, where they engaged the country’s Transitional Government on the ongoing democratic transition process.
The high-level mission focused on assessing progress towards the restoration of constitutional governance and strengthening regional support for a peaceful and inclusive political transition in the West African nation.
Speaking after the engagement, Minister Kabba said the ECOWAS delegation held frank and constructive discussions with the transitional authorities, emphasising the regional bloc’s commitment to supporting the people of Guinea-Bissau in their quest for democratic governance and lasting stability.

The delegation reiterated ECOWAS’ position that the people of Guinea-Bissau deserve a peaceful, transparent and inclusive transition process that reflects their democratic aspirations.
The mission also acknowledged the commitment demonstrated by General Horta Inta’A and the transitional government towards a short transition period, noting the announcement of general elections scheduled for December 6, 2026.
According to the delegation, the planned elections represent an important step towards restoring constitutional order and strengthening democratic institutions in the country.
Minister Kabba further highlighted the role of Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, who currently serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, alongside Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, in advancing regional efforts aimed at supporting the transition process in Guinea-Bissau.

The ECOWAS delegation reaffirmed the regional bloc’s readiness to continue working with the transitional authorities and relevant stakeholders to ensure a credible and peaceful electoral process ahead of the scheduled polls.
The visit forms part of ECOWAS’ ongoing diplomatic engagements across the region aimed at promoting democracy, constitutional governance and political stability among member states.
