Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Kailahun District, leaving a popular market and a bridge in ruins.
Residents are now accusing the Kailahun District Council of negligence in addressing the recurring issue.
The overnight downpour caused widespread flooding in the district, with the market and bridge bearing the brunt of the damage. Hundreds of market tables were destroyed, and the bridge linking the two sides of the market was rendered impassable.
Lawah Stream, which flows through the town, has been a perennial problem, overflowing during heavy rains and inundating the market. Traders have been left counting their losses with many displaced due to the destruction of their stalls.
Frustrated residents, including Jusu Borbor, Lansana Sokoh, and Mustapha Tommy, have expressed disappointment with the lack of action from both the District Council and the traders’ union.
They are calling on authorities to address the Lawah Stream issue to prevent further damage and disruptions to the community.
It’s really sad to see this situation repeating itself after every 10 to 15 yrs. This was witness in 1975 as the stream flooded from it source right through the town destroying houses at the stream bands . It occurred again in late 80s. The same occurred again Early 2000.
There are three bridges leading to this same market center ( Doorbagaeya) one on the main Buedu Rd, another from Lengor street and another from mopama. The market area is situated on a low land elevated towards kissy Town.
Blaming the present administration?
Lawuah has never been properly iregated compounded with garden works near it bands . NDMA needs to do something to avert such in future.
