Kamakwie, a town in northwest region Karene District has experiences a crisis on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, when a major bridge collapsed after a night of heavy rainfall.

The incident has left vehicles stranded on both sides of the broken structure, effectively halting transportation in and out of the district headquarters and disrupting the daily lives of residents.

The bridge served as a crucial link connecting Kamakwie to neighboring towns, including Makeni. With its sudden collapse, movement has ground to a halt, forcing residents to seek longer and less reliable alternative routes. These detours not only increase travel time but also place additional strain on already overburdened feeder roads.

Footage from the scene shows numerous vehicles parked helplessly on either side of the collapsed bridge, as travelers assess the damage with visible concern.
According to Osman Turay, a local resident expresses his frustration: “Just yesterday, I used this bridge to visit project communities in Kamakwie. But returning today, it’s gone. We are now left with no option but to make a long detour through other chiefdoms. This is not helpful .”

Osman has called for urgent government intervention, appealing for the situation to be treated as an emergency. “This is not just an infrastructure failure; it’s a crisis affecting livelihoods, the movement of food, and other developments,” he emphasized.

There are growing fears that similar infrastructural weaknesses in the region could lead to further disasters if not addressed swiftly. Kamakwie community now face uncertainty, grappling with a reality where access to basic services and regional connections has been severely compromised.
