Sierra Leone’s Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty has shared the success story in addressing sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) issues with Gambia’s Minister of Gender and Social Development at the CSW68 in New York.
Speaking at the event the minister highlighted the challenges Sierra Leone went through in dealing with sexual gender based violence issues as well as key interventions to combat such. She referenced the fight of the First Lady Fatima Bio’s ‘Hands Off Our Girls’ campaign that has played a significant effort in stabilizing the fight to have the safety of women assured.
She furthered that it was necessary for the Gambian government and all other governments to make a commitment at the highest level to end SGBV as well as increase women’s participation in governance and leadership.

The honourable minister encouraged the two countries to share ideas on lessons learnt and areas to improve upon if they are to succeed in combating SGBV.
Gambians rank gender-based violence (GBV) as the second-most important women’s-rights issue that the government and society must address, after unequal access to education.
