Prominent Lawyers Augustine and Wara Serry announced EGM to enhance SLBA Governance, urge active member participation.

According to Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah (Mr.), Wara Serry-Kamal (Ms.), the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) has announced the convening of an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) slated for Wednesday, July 10th, 2024, at 2 PM. The meeting will be held at the New Brookfields Hotel on Jomo Kenyetta Road in Freetown. This announcement comes after a requisition by the members of the Bar under Section 187(2) of the Companies Act 2009 (as amended).

The call for the EGM follows a formal request made on May 27th, 2024, by a significant number of SLBA members. This request aimed to address critical issues outlined in their Requisition Notice. According to the provisions of Section 187(2), the Directors of the SLBA were expected to convene the meeting within 21 days of the request. However, the stipulated period has elapsed without action from the Directors, prompting the members to take the initiative.

In accordance with Section 187(4) of the Companies Act, the members are now exercising their right to convene the EGM independently. The primary agenda for this meeting is to discuss and address pressing matters affecting the governance and operations of the SLBA, ensuring that the concerns and interests of its members are adequately represented and addressed.

The announcement was made official through a press statement issued by prominent lawyers Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah and Wara Serry-Kamal. They emphasized the importance of active participation from all members of the Bar to ensure a robust and representative deliberation process. The EGM is seen as a crucial step towards enhancing the transparency, accountability, and overall governance of the SLBA.

The press statement assures all stakeholders that a detailed notice of the EGM, including the agenda and other pertinent information, will be disseminated shortly. This proactive communication is intended to keep all members informed and engaged in the upcoming discussions.

Mr. Marrah and Ms. Serry-Kamal reiterated the collective commitment to uphold the values and principles that define the legal profession in Sierra Leone. They stressed the need for unity and active involvement to foster a transparent and accountable SLBA, which is essential for the welfare and good governance of the association.
