Bai Mahmoud Bangura, the National Organizing Secretary of the All People’s Congress (APC), has been acquitted and discharged of all treason-related charges by the High Court.

The decision, delivered by Justice Komba Kamanda, brings to an end a long legal battle that saw Bai Mahmoud facing allegations of involvement in a failed coup attempt in November 2023.

Bangura, along with eleven others, had been accused of participating in activities that posed a threat to the state.

He was charged with treason and misprision of treason, both linked to the arrest of Mohamed Jalloh, who was found in possession of military uniforms at Bangura’s residence in Regent. However, after a thorough examination of the evidence, the court found no basis to uphold the charges against him, leading to his full acquittal.

This verdict comes as a significant relief to Bangura and his supporters, who maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal. The case had taken a toll on his health, with Bangura collapsing in court during earlier proceedings, prompting the judge to accommodate his health needs by allowing a separate trial.

In response to the ruling, Bai Mahmoud expressed his deep gratitude to the APC leadership and party members for their unwavering support during what he described as a challenging and painful period. “I am thankful to everyone who stood by me through this difficult time. Your support has been invaluable,” he said.

Bai Mahmoud also emphasized his intention to move forward without holding any grudges. “I hold no resentment towards anyone. I have accepted the will of the Almighty, and I urge my family, friends, and supporters to embrace peace and unity as we move forward,” he stated, calling for reconciliation and collective progress.
