Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Isata Mahoi, has expressed concern over persistent social and economic challenges affecting women and girls in Sierra Leone, particularly those living in rural communities and female-headed households.

Speaking at the Government Weekly Press Conference held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at the Miatta Civic Center, Dr. Mahoi stated that many girls continue to face vulnerability despite ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

She acknowledged progress made in increasing women’s participation across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, but noted that leadership opportunities for women remain limited.

According to the Minister, empowering women through education and economic opportunities contributes significantly to stronger families and national development.

Dr. Mahoi also called on families to become more actively involved in raising and protecting children, stressing that the home remains central to shaping responsible citizens and addressing social problems affecting young people.

Her remarks formed part of broader discussions at the press conference on the importance of strengthening family systems ahead of the commemoration of the International Day of Families.
