The Ministry of Energy today hosted a Mini-Grid Weekly Discussion at its conference hall, bringing together key stakeholders in Sierra Leone’s renewable energy landscape.

The meeting aimed to evaluate ongoing projects, review regulations, and address challenges in expanding energy access to underserved communities nationwide.

The session, convened by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Energy, commenced with individual prayers and an introduction of Wendy Jacob, the representative from Irish Aid. Stakeholders present included the Ministry of Energy, Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), World Bank, UNOPS, PowerGen, PowerLens, the Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC), GIZ, and the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Unit.

Director Mohamed A. Abu of the PPP Unit outlined the agenda, which featured critical presentations. These included updates on the 1MW Mini-Grid project in Moyamba, the installation of 404 standalone solar home systems (SHS) in schools and health facilities, and progress on the Transforming Energy Access in Sierra Leone (TEASL) project. The meeting also addressed the development of mini-grid regulations and skills mapping to support renewable energy deployment.

However, a significant setback occurred as some participants scheduled to present virtually were unavailable, prompting the cancellation of presentations. Despite this, productive discussions ensued. Director Mohamed A. Abu emphasized the necessity of establishing a steering committee to drive project implementation. Alfred Kiama of EWRC highlighted the scope of work and legal frameworks essential for the success of mini-grid initiatives. He was tasked with providing a comprehensive update at the next meeting.

Discussions around regulations and the planned installations underscore Sierra Leone’s commitment to addressing energy access gaps in rural communities. Wendy Jacob from Irish Aid remarked on the transformative potential of renewable energy projects to uplift schools and healthcare facilities and ensure critical services remain operational in underserved areas.

The meeting was adjourned to Friday, 22 November 2024, when stakeholders are expected to reconvene to advance deliberations and finalize strategies.
