The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Resources in collaboration with the National Minerals Agency with found from the African Development Bank has completed a day outreach sensitization meeting for Artisanal and small-Scale mining sector in Kono District .
The project titled ”Enhancing Efficiency and Sustainable of Artisan and Small -Scale mining through climate Smart Actions” was held at the Kono District Council Hall in Koidu City Kono District wherein the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Resources doubles as a the Project Coordinator for Enhancing Efficiency and Sustainable of Artisan and Small-Scale mining through climate Smart Actions Emmanuel M. Sandi said the project comprises of three components of which deals with formalization of the Artisan and Small scale mining section, capacity building of Artisan and Small-Scale mining which is been regulated by the National Minerals Agency (NMA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the management component of the project.
He disclosed that the project will be implemented within two years period and the expected outcomes would strength the capacity of the Mid- Term National Development Plan.
Mr. Sandi pointed out that they will developed comprehensive legal frameworks, ensuring access to developing capital building which will successful formalized within the ASM to monitor and enforce laws and regulations by establishing a proper monitoring system using remote sensing technology.
The Regional manager of National Minerals Agency in Kono District Kai Lebbie cited that women are also key in the Artisan and Small-Scale mining sector and the Agency has been issuing licenses to women active in the mining sector.
According to him, the Artisan and Small-Scale mining is one of the important components of the mines and Minerals sector in the country which contributes to job creation for the rural population.
The manager of EPA in Kono District Ishmail Jalloh said deforestation should be discouraged.
Representatives of the civil society organizations and local miners called for a real course of the project to be actualized.
