The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has reintroduced the “Annual Kite Flying Festival” on Thursday, 1st May, 2025, at Gigibonta Car Park along Lumley Beach Road.

The event, made possible with support from partners including Sierra Leone Commercial Bank and Eminence Africa, marks a renewed effort to breathe life into a cherished tradition that has faded over the years.

The competition drew participants from various backgrounds and age groups, emphasizing the festival’s aim to reconnect individuals with nostalgic childhood experiences. With three distinct categories: Best Designed Kite, Best Ecotourism Kite, and the Kite that Flies the Farthest, attendees had the opportunity to showcase their creativity and skills.

Kelvina Pitt clinched the award for Best Designed Kite, receiving a cash prize of Le10,000, while Samuel Kamara won the prize for the kite that flew the farthest, taking home Le5,000. In recognition of the efforts of all participants, consolation prizes were also awarded, highlighting the festive spirit of the event.

The reintroduction of the kite flying competition reflects the Ministry’s commitment to preserving the customs and traditions that shape the national identity. A representative from the Ministry remarked, “It is only when that is done, can we expect to project a compelling image to the world.”

The event reinforced the ministry’s commitment to customs, traditions and practices that define us as a nation. It is only when that is done, can we expect to project a compelling image to the world.
