Sierra Leone’s National Public Health Agency (NPHA) reported on Monday, June 23, 2025, that the ongoing mpox outbreak has tragically claimed 28 lives across the country.

The update, released at 3:00 PM, also indicates a cumulative total of 4,350 confirmed cases since the outbreak began.

The NPHA data shows 53 new cases were recorded, while 37 new recoveries were also reported, bringing the total number of recovered individuals to 3,632. This leaves 690 active cases currently under management.

Sierra Leone currently ranks among the African nations most affected by mpox, alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The outbreak primarily impacts individuals aged 20-39, with a notable concentration among women aged 20-29.

The Western Urban district, which includes the capital Freetown, remains the hardest hit region with 2,517 confirmed cases, followed by Western Rural with 876 cases. Other significantly affected districts include Port Loko (159 cases), Bombali (249 cases), and Kenema (101 cases).

The gender breakdown of confirmed cases shows a slight prevalence in males, with 2,279 male cases compared to 2,071 female cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reaffirmed that the global mpox outbreak, of which Sierra Leone’s situation is a part, remains a public health emergency of international concern.

The NPHA urges the public to call 117 for more information or to report suspected cases, emphasizing continued vigilance to curb the spread of the virus. Official data and updates are also available on their website, www.npha.gov.sl.
