The legal community in Sierra Leone is set to welcome a new organisation aimed at advocating for the rule of law, justice, and the professional growth of legal practitioners.

The newly established “Law Society of Sierra Leone” will officially launch on 1 November 2024 at the New Brookfields Hotel. This organisation comes in response to concerns raised by legal professionals who see a need for lawyers to take a stronger stance on issues of democracy, good governance, and the legal system’s integrity in Sierra Leone.

This development follows recent controversy surrounding the last Bar Association elections held in Kenema, where two prominent figures, Wara Serry-Kamal and  Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah, were presidential candidates. Both candidates alleged electoral malpractice and have contested the results in court.

According to a press release from the society, the “Law Society of Sierra Leone” is envisioned as a complementary body to other legal organisations, such as @L_A_W_Y_E_R_S_ @ILRAJ2
and Legal Link aiming to introduce “diverse voices” to the advocacy landscape.

Marrah and Serry-Kamal, who jointly announced the formation of the Law Society, emphasised that this new entity is a “realisation of aspirations and dreams” for a more active and united legal community committed to upholding constitutional mandates.
