The National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA) has intensified efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s healthcare system with the nationwide distribution of essential medicines and medical supplies for the first and second quarters of 2026.

The Agency, which is mandated to ensure the availability of safe and quality health commodities, commenced the distribution exercise a week ago, beginning with key referral facilities including Ola During Children’s Hospital and Princess Christian Maternity Hospital in Freetown. Since then, the exercise has expanded to cover over seven districts and more than ten health facilities, with deliveries ongoing across the country in line with the national distribution schedule.

According to NMSA, the distribution package includes a wide range of essential health commodities such as Free Healthcare (FHC) medicines, Essential Medicines, Nutrition Commodities, Cost Recovery Medicines, and Ebola Preparedness and Response Supplies.

Free Healthcare commodities, funded by the Government of Sierra Leone and its development partners, are provided at no cost to beneficiaries. The Agency emphasized that these supplies must be managed in strict compliance with national guidelines to ensure transparency, accountability, and equitable access for all.

In addition, Cost Recovery medicines are being distributed through the routine national supply chain to help sustain the availability of quality medicines at public health facilities, thereby supporting long-term service delivery.

As part of efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness, the distribution also includes Ebola Preparedness and Response Supplies such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) materials. These items are strategically pre-positioned and are to be used only during authorised public health emergencies.

Nutrition commodities also form a critical part of the exercise, targeting maternal, newborn, and child health, as well as community nutrition programmes. These supplies are expected to improve nutritional outcomes among vulnerable populations when managed in accordance with national standards.

The ongoing nationwide rollout underscores NMSA’s commitment to ensuring that essential medicines and medical supplies are consistently available across all levels of the healthcare system. Through this effort, the Agency continues to play a pivotal role in supporting quality healthcare delivery and improving health outcomes nationwide.
