The National Public Health Agency (NPHA), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has convened a high-level engagement with journalists, media practitioners, civil society organizations, and social media influencers at The Hub Hotel, Wilberforce, Freetown.
Held under the theme “Media Role in Mpox Response, RCCE, Surveillance, Gender, IPC, Case Management, and SRHR,” the event underscored the pivotal role of the media in shaping effective public health communication and response strategies.
With Mpox posing significant public health challenges across Sierra Leone, the forum highlighted the media’s vital function not only as a source of information but also as a key partner in the national response. Participants discussed how timely, accurate, and culturally sensitive reporting can save lives, combat misinformation, and strengthen community trust in health interventions.
Key sessions explored the importance of factual and responsible reporting, the development of clear and inclusive messaging, and the integration of gender and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) considerations into public health communication. Discussions also emphasized leveraging media platforms to promote infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, reduce stigma, and encourage communities to adopt safe behaviors.
Representatives from UNFPA reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to advancing SRHR and ensuring uninterrupted access to essential health services, even during crises. The partnership between UNFPA and NPHA aims to ensure that Sierra Leone’s Mpox response remains inclusive, gender-sensitive, and rooted in community engagement.
Participants were urged to use their platforms to advocate for accurate reporting, challenge harmful narratives, and amplify messages that uphold human dignity and protect lives.
The collaboration between NPHA and UNFPA reflects a shared vision of building a transparent, equitable, and community-driven public health system.
As Sierra Leone strengthens its response to Mpox, the partnership highlights the transformative power of communication and the indispensable role of media professionals in safeguarding public health and promoting national resilience.
