The Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Mrs. Jeneba J. Bangura, has outlined key tax reforms aimed at improving compliance, transparency, and service delivery during the Salone Civic Festival held at the Youyi Building in Freetown.
Speaking at the event organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE), Mrs. Bangura emphasized the importance of tax education, particularly the introduction of tax awareness programmes in schools, as a long-term strategy to build a culture of compliance.
She highlighted the ongoing digitalisation of NRA systems, noting that automation has improved efficiency and transparency across revenue administration. Among the initiatives mentioned were the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS), which supports automated payments for Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and Goods and Services Tax (GST), as well as recent improvements in customs clearance processes.
The Commissioner General also referenced the Non-Tax Payment Mobile App as part of efforts to simplify payments.
Mrs. Bangura acknowledged operational challenges, including electricity and internet connectivity, which continue to affect service delivery. She called for fair and consistent taxation while urging taxpayers to meet their obligations.
She further encouraged businesses to charge and remit GST using Electronic Cash Registers, describing compliance as essential to national development.
The session concluded with a question-and-answer segment, during which the Commissioner General addressed concerns raised by members of the public.
