Foreign Minister Timothy Musa Kabba has revealed that Abubakarr Sillah, Assistant Director of Labour and Employment at Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Labour, failed to return home after attending the 2025 Diaspora Investment Conference in Maryland, raising concerns over U.S. visa compliance.
Minister Kabba described the situation as “a regrettable breach that underscores why certain visa categories for Sierra Leoneans remain restricted.” He explained that Sillah was granted a visa on 8th August 2025 to participate in the conference, but has since not returned, highlighting the challenges faced by the government in maintaining international trust.
“We are relentlessly working behind the scenes with the U.S. Embassy in Freetown to resolve this matter,” the Minister said. “This incident threatens the integrity of our bilateral relations and complicates legitimate travel for Sierra Leoneans pursuing education, investment, and professional opportunities abroad. We urge all officials and citizens to strictly comply with visa regulations to prevent further restrictions.”
Minister Kabba emphasized that the government remains committed to addressing the issue while reinforcing measures to safeguard Sierra Leone’s reputation internationally.
