Traders at Tender Hill Market in Kabala have raised alarm over a shortage of onions, a staple ingredient in local cooking.
The scarcity is affecting businesses and frustrating residents across the Koinadugu–Falaba District.
Koinadugu, often referred to as Sierra Leone’s agricultural heartland, has in recent years faced challenges that slowed vegetable production. The current shortage of onions is adding further strain to the region’s food supply chain.
Madam Kadiatu, popularly known as Kadie Yabas, a long-time onion vendor, described the situation as severe. “Supply has been very limited in recent weeks. We can’t meet customer demand, and it’s hurting our business,” she said.

The shortage is also impacting cookery sellers. Mrs. Hawa Fofanah of Jadaia Town said higher prices are driving customers away. “Onion is essential in soup and stew. Without it, people complain and stop buying. Now, a single onion costs around NLe 20,” she explained, adding that the prices of other vegetables, such as cabbage, have also risen.
Traders and residents are calling on authorities and agricultural stakeholders to intervene and stabilize food supplies in the district.
