Members of Parliament have expressed their concerns regarding the escalating land disputes in Freetown during a recent parliamentary hearing.
MPs raised serious issues about the urgent need for action to address these disputes, noting that the Ministry of Land and community stakeholders have been involved in exploiting land from the public.
Honorable Boston Munda called on Foday-Musa to leverage his experience and integrity to restore order at the Land Commission. He assured Foday-Musa of Parliament’s full support in bringing sanity to both the Land Commission and the Ministry of Land.
Chief Whip of the Opposition All People’s Congress (APC), Honorable Abdul Karim Kamara, shared his troubling experience with the Ministry of Land. He described a situation in which a plot of land he purchased was seized and declared “state land.” Hon. Kamara lamented that despite providing all necessary documentation, he lost his land.
Furthermore, he revealed that even as an MP, his land was forcefully taken from him by officials at the Ministry of Land under the pretext of “state land,” with all efforts to reclaim it proving futile. The Opposition Whip accused Ministry of Land officials of engaging in fraudulent practices, including the double registration of land to different owners.
Hon. Kamara also recounted a recent court ruling that overturned the Ministry’s actions, which garnered widespread public support. He urged Foday-Musa to prioritize reforming the Ministry and addressing the land-related problems faced by Sierra Leoneans.
