The Parliamentary Committee on Sports, in partnership with the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Sports, on Thursday, 25th June 2026, conducted a joint inspection of the ongoing rehabilitation works at the Siaka Stevens National Stadium in Freetown.

The oversight visit, chaired by Hon. Racheal Mariatu Sesay Pessima, was aimed at assessing the level of progress made so far by the Chinese contractors tasked with upgrading the country’s main sporting facility.

Speaking during the tour, Hon. Pessima said Parliament has a constitutional duty to monitor public projects and ensure value for money in the use of public funds. She described the National Stadium as a symbol of national pride, the home of Leone Stars, and a key hub for youth development.

“The National Stadium is more than concrete and steel. It is our national pride, the home of Leone Stars, and the hub for youth development. We are here to see the work, ask the hard questions, and make sure Sierra Leoneans get a facility that meets international standards,” she said.

The Executive Director of the NSA, Mohamed Alphaka Conteh, briefed the delegation on key components of the rehabilitation project, including the re-grassing of the main pitch, installation of modern floodlights, renovation of dressing rooms, upgrading of spectator stands, construction of a new tartan track, and improvement of drainage systems.

According to site engineers, Phase One of the project has been completed and is scheduled for handover on 30th June 2026. The contractors assured the delegation that the stadium will be ready to host CAF and FIFA-approved matches upon completion of the full project.

Mr. Conteh noted that the rehabilitation will reposition Sierra Leone to host international fixtures and reduce the high costs currently incurred in playing home matches abroad. He added that once completed, the facility will provide athletes with a world-class environment for training and competition, boosting morale and sports tourism.

The inspection ended with a commitment from all stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and ensure the project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
