Police in Mongo Bendugu, Falaba District, on Monday intercepted nine commercial motorbike riders allegedly transporting individuals suspected to be Malian nationals during a targeted border security operation.
The operation, which was aimed at monitoring and controlling movements around Sierra Leone’s northern border, led to the arrest of both the suspected foreign nationals and the commercial riders. Authorities confirmed that all suspects are currently in police custody pending further investigations.
According to preliminary reports, the group was intercepted while allegedly attempting to move through the area using unofficial routes often linked to unauthorized cross-border activities. Security personnel stationed in the district have in recent months heightened surveillance following increasing concerns over the influx of undocumented foreigners and the movement of cattle into Sierra Leone without proper clearance.
Residents in border communities have repeatedly raised alarm over the growing number of foreign nationals and herders reportedly entering the country through illegal crossing points, particularly in Falaba and neighboring districts. Some locals fear the trend could pose security, economic, and environmental challenges if left unchecked.
Law enforcement authorities say the latest arrests form part of broader efforts to tighten border controls, combat illegal migration, and ensure that all cross-border activities comply with national immigration and trade regulations.
Police have not yet released the identities of the suspects, and it remains unclear whether any immigration or trafficking-related charges will be filed.
