In a strategic move aimed at enhancing the efficiency and coordination within Sierra Leone’s energy sector, President Julius Maada Bio has appointed Dr. Kandeh Yumkella as the Chair of the newly established Energy Governance Coordination Group (EGCG). The group is tasked with ensuring effective information sharing and coherence within the Ministry of Energy.

The EGCG will play a critical role in guiding the technical operations of key entities within the energy sector, including the Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC), the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), and the Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC). The group’s mandate includes providing facilitating and catalytic support to address both immediate and short-term challenges within the sector.

Additionally, the EGCG will support the implementation of policy and institutional reforms critical to the advancement of the energy sector. As part of its responsibilities, the group will also offer guidance in the design of initiatives aimed at improving the sector’s performance.

To ensure accountability and transparency, the EGCG will provide regular briefings to President Bio, Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, and Chief Minister David Francis every two weeks. This appointment underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening Sierra Leone’s energy infrastructure and addressing the ongoing challenges within the sector.

Dr. Yumkella, a seasoned energy expert with extensive international experience, is expected to bring significant expertise to this new role, contributing to the country’s broader energy reform agenda.
