President Julius Maada Bio has announced that Sierra Leone will conduct a nationwide Population and Housing Census later this year, describing the exercise as a key national undertaking that will provide the reliable data needed to strengthen development planning and improve public service delivery.

The President made the announcement during a Presidential Town Hall Meeting in Makeni, where he assured citizens that the census would be conducted in a transparent, credible and inclusive manner, free from political interference.

President Bio said his government is committed to ensuring that the exercise reflects the true demographic realities of the country, emphasising that the census is intended to serve the interests of every Sierra Leonean regardless of political affiliation or geographic location.

He urged citizens across the country to participate fully in the enumeration process, noting that an accurate population count is essential for informed policymaking, equitable allocation of national resources and effective planning for future development.

According to the President, the data generated from the census will support government decision-making across key sectors, including health, education, housing, employment and infrastructure, enabling authorities to better respond to the needs of communities nationwide.

President Bio further stated that the census will serve as a critical tool for shaping Sierra Leone’s long-term socio-economic development agenda, ensuring that government policies and investment decisions are based on accurate and up-to-date population statistics.
