Yusuf Keketoma Sandi Esq, Press Secretary at State House, has responded to lawyer Basita Michael’s recent statement criticizing the media landscape in Sierra Leone.
Michael described the media as compromised and dominated by individuals unwilling or afraid to challenge President Julius Maada Bio or provide him with honest counsel.
In his response, Sandi condemned Michael’s characterization of those surrounding President Bio’s regime as “sycophants,” labeling it a “shameful misuse of free speech.” He argued that democracy does not grant individuals the right to make reckless comments or impugn the characters of those with whom they disagree.
Sandi emphasized, “You can be critical without being repugnant, as tone and choice of words matter in enhancing constructive national conversation.” He asserted that President Bio’s administration is not surrounded by “sycophants and yes men,” but rather by professional, experienced, and knowledgeable individuals dedicated to public service out of love for their country and a commitment to their fellow citizens.
The sheer impudence for Basita Michael to refer to those who “surround” President Julius Maada Bio’s regime as sycophants is a shameful misuse of free speech. Democracy does not grant anyone the right to hurl insults, make reckless comments or impugn the characters of those they disagree with. You can be critical without being repugnant because tone and choice of words matter in enhancing constructive national conversation. Therefore, for your much-needed edification, President Bio’s regime is NOT “surrounded” by “sycophants and yes men,” but by professional, experienced, knowledgeable and decent men and women. While they may not share your inclination for toxic rhetoric, they are in public service out of love for our country and deep commitment to their fellow citizens.
When they speaks no one comment when others speak everyone wants to talk
