Professor Joe A.D. Alie has officially retired from active duty as a Professor at Fourah Bay College during its 198th-anniversary ceremony.
A renowned historian, educator, and author, Professor Alie dedicated decades to shaping young minds and enriching Sierra Leone’s academic landscape.
Professor Alie’s extensive contributions, particularly in the fields of history and social studies, have left an indelible mark on both his students and the nation. He served as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of History and African Studies at the University of Sierra Leone (FBC campus).
Originally from Moyamba, Professor Alie earned a BA Hons and MA in Modern History from the University of Sierra Leone, a PhD in African History, and a Certificate in African Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA).
Prior to his university career, Professor Alie studied Education at Milton Margai Teachers College (now Milton Margai College of Education and Technology) and taught at various schools across Sierra Leone. His influence extends beyond the classroom through his widely used textbooks, including “A New History of Sierra Leone,” “Sierra Leone Junior Secondary Social Studies/Population Education I-III,” and “A Concise Guide to Writing College and Research Papers,” among others.
During the anniversary ceremony, Professor Alie delivered a farewell speech that resonated deeply with the students in attendance. His words served as a final lesson, leaving a lasting impression on the FBC community.
The University of Sierra Leone community expressed its gratitude for Professor Alie’s unwavering service and significant contributions to the institution and the country. Many fondly remember his impact on their primary school years through his engaging textbooks. His legacy at FBC will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of scholars and educators.
