The Sierra Leone Housing Corporation’s (SALHOC) leadership has recently undertook a strategic assessment of important development sites in the Western Area Rural and Koya Rural districts to tighten control and protect government-owned land.
The inspection team, led by recently appointed General Manager Mr. Joseph Munda Sandi and Deputy General Manager Mr. Emmanuel Tommy, visited SALHOC sites in Macdonald, Maparia, and Six Mile, which are critical to the corporation’s housing development goals. The visits were to examine present conditions, involve local stakeholders, and address concerns about land encroachment.
The team met with previous Headman Mr. Amadu Kamara on SALHOC’s 11-acre property in Macdonald. Headman Albert Koroma welcomed the team to a 150-acre plot in Maparia. At Six Mile, the leadership met with Chairman Abu Bakarr Kamara, who manages 200 acres and 52 housing units under SALHOC’s control.
The Deputy General Manager talked about the benefit of a coordinated approach to secure these properties from illegal encroachment.
SALHOC’s General Manager, Sandi, thanked local leaders for their support and assured the organization’s commitment to converting the properties into low-cost housing estates replete with schools and healthcare services. He said that such progress is based on obtaining appropriate financing.
Ing. Martin Massaquoi, Housing and Planning Manager, lay emphasis on the continued issues of land protection as well as the value of community participation. He cautioned that without collaborative watchfulness, development attempts may be postponed or be at risk.
SALHOC was founded in 1982 to facilitate the development and management of housing across the country. To date, the corporation’s greatest famous achievement is the Seven Battalion Estate in Goderich. However, with new leadership and direction, SALHOC is ready to expand its reach and alleviate the nation’s huge housing need.
