Following the devastating collapse of a 7-story building at Shell New Road, Kissy, opposition leader and 2023 APC presidential candidate Dr. Samura Kamara has issued a statement, addressing the loss of lives and calling for urgent reforms to prevent future tragedies.

As of the latest count by the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), the collapse has claimed the lives of 16 people, including men, women, and children. Several families have been left homeless. Kamara expressed his deep condolences to the grieving families, stating, “The pain you are enduring is unimaginable, and I stand with you during this time of grief.”

Kamara commended the relentless efforts of the NDMA, the Freetown City Council, defense personnel, and volunteers who have been working around the clock to rescue survivors and recover the deceased. “Your courage and dedication exemplify the indomitable spirit of Sierra Leone,” Kamara praised.

However, Kamara stressed that this disaster must serve as a wake-up call, highlighting deep-seated structural issues that require immediate attention. He emphasized the urgent need for a National Safe Housing Policy, especially in light of rapid urbanization and the challenges posed by climate change. Citing a 2022 study by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Kamara pointed out that the lack of access to adequate and affordable housing is a critical issue in Sierra Leone.

He called on the government to heed the study’s recommendations and to ensure that housing is viewed not just as a basic necessity, but as a key determinant of health, economic security, and safety.

Kamara also raised questions about the collapse, asking whether proper building standards were followed and whether the disaster could have been prevented. He called for an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation to uncover the truth, stating that the people of Sierra Leone deserve answers.

Furthermore, Kamara urged for the strengthening of building regulations across the country, pledging to advocate for strict safety standards. “This is not just about preventing another building collapse,” he said, “it’s about safeguarding the lives of every Sierra Leonean.”

In addition to addressing housing safety, Kamara called for the creation of a social safety net for survivors and affected families, which would include affordable housing, trauma counseling, and medical care. He also urged the government to prioritize the restoration of lives and livelihoods for those impacted by the collapse.

Kamara’s message ended with a call for national unity and cooperation, emphasizing the need for all Sierra Leoneans to come together, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, or social status, to support those affected and implement necessary reforms. He also appealed to the international community and the diaspora for their expertise and resources to strengthen the country’s disaster preparedness and response systems.

“As the rescue operations wind down, let us remain hopeful and pray for the safe recovery of anyone still trapped beneath the debris,” Kamara said in conclusion. “Together, we can build a safer, stronger, and more united nation.”
