The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education (MBSSE) has officially released the results for the 2024 May/June West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education, Conrad Sackey, made the announcement today, revealing that a total of 146,179 candidates from 816 schools participated in the examination. This figure represents a slight decrease compared to the 243,202 candidates who sat for the WASSCE in 2023.
While the results for 36 private schools (owing a total of 10,563 WAEC fees) were not included in the initial list, the remaining 135,617 candidates from 781 schools have received their results.
Of the total candidates, 83,113 successfully sat for at least one subject or more, while 27,097 were unfortunately unable to obtain results due to withheld examinations.
A significant milestone was achieved with 25,000 candidates passing five subjects, including English and Mathematics. The overall average grade unit for the examination was 3.19.
The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education has urged schools and candidates to collect their results from designated centers and to utilize the results for further academic pursuits and career advancement.

Growing Concern Over the Unjust Withholding of WASCE Results
On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the 2023/2024 WASCE results were released, yet the manner in which they were published has once again raised serious concerns among citizens, principals, teachers, and students. Many are deeply dissatisfied and frustrated by the decision of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to unnecessarily withhold the results of over 20,000 candidates without any clear explanation or justification.
Last year, over 10,000 results were withheld. When those results were finally released, the majority were canceled, leaving many innocent pupils with no opportunity to receive the qualifications they worked so hard to achieve. This has caused significant distress and frustration among pupils, parents, and teachers alike. The situation this year has escalated, with more than 20,000 results now being withheld, despite the fact that these exams were paid for by both the Government of Sierra Leone and private institutions.
We, the concerned citizens of Sierra Leone, demand transparency and accountability from WAEC regarding this issue. Withholding results without a thorough and transparent investigation creates unnecessary confusion and despair, especially when many of these pupils were not involved in any examination malpractice. It is important to note that the grounds on which results can be withheld or canceled include:
1. Suspected involvement in examination malpractice.
2. Collusion or irregularities during the administration of the exam.
3. Breach of the examination rules by candidates or invigilators.
However, we are deeply concerned about the inconsistencies and irregularities on the part of WAEC itself. Over the past few years, there have been allegations that some WAEC staff have leaked exam questions on social media during the examination period. No meaningful investigation or action has been taken against these WAEC officials, yet innocent students are being punished. This selective application of justice raises significant questions about WAEC’s conduct and motives.
We are calling on the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to launch a comprehensive investigation into WAEC’s handling of the 2023/2024 WASCE results. This examination body must be held accountable for its actions, as the continuous withholding and cancelation of results without proper investigation is causing emotional and financial strain on students, parents, and schools. It is also damaging the trust that the public once had in the examination system.
Furthermore, the irregularities in the conduct of WASCE are not limited to withheld results. Last year, candidates were reportedly given high grades (A1) in subjects they did not even offer. Such glaring errors suggest a deeper issue within WAEC’s operational processes, and we demand that these issues be addressed as a matter of urgency.
We believe that education is the foundation of our nation’s future, and our examination bodies must uphold the highest standards of fairness, integrity, and accountability. The current situation, if left unchecked, could lead to a further erosion of trust in the system and undermine the efforts of the government and educators in promoting quality education.
Therefore, we respectfully urge His Excellency the President, the First Lady, the Chief Minister, the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, and all relevant authorities to intervene in this matter. We also call on the Anti-Corruption Commission to prioritize an investigation into WAEC’s operations, especially in relation to the withholding of results, exam leakages, and other irregularities.
The students of Sierra Leone deserve better. They deserve to have their hard work recognized and rewarded, not subjected to arbitrary actions that threaten their future.
We hope that this open concern will be taken seriously, and we look forward to seeing immediate action taken to restore faith in our education system.
Sincerely,
Concerned Citizen
