President Dr. Julius Maada Bio announced that Sierra Leone has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2026-2028 term, receiving 186 votes.

This election, which was declared today, 4th June, 2025, marks a significant transition for Sierra Leone as it moves from the United Nations Security Council to ECOSOC.

In his statement, President Bio expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are deeply grateful to UN Member States for their overwhelming support and continued trust in Sierra Leone’s global leadership.”

He further asserted that the landmark election reflects the international community’s confidence in Sierra Leone’s contributions to global governance.

ECOSOC serves as a critical platform for directing and assessing international economic, social, and environmental policies. It facilitates dialogue, offers recommendations to member states, and coordinates the activities of specialized agencies, which are essential for achieving global development goals.

Under the guidance of the PATH Agenda, Sierra Leone’s agenda within ECOSOC will focus on peacebuilding, food security, technological innovation, and human capital development.

The Director of Communications in the Office of the President, Myk Berewa asserted, “Transitioning from the UN Security Council to ECOSOC, Sierra Leone reaffirms its strong commitment to the core principles of the United Nations: peace, development, and human rights,”

The election is viewed as a reflection of President Bio’s vision and foresight, reinforcing Sierra Leone’s commitment to enhancing its role on the global stage.
