Sierra Leone Having emerged as sole candidate for the United Nations Security Council seat bid for 2024 -2025, which is one of the six principal organs and the most powerful body of the United Nations with the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, recommending the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly, and approving any changes to the UN Charter.
President, Julius Maada Bio is expected to nationally launch the UNSC bid campaign Materials today Monday 9th May, 2022.
The nationwide rollout of the UNSC campaign materials will increase citizen awareness and ownership, as well as rally local support for the Presidency at the United Nations Security Council.
ECOWAS and the African Union have given their support to the country. Sierra Leone will not be competing with any other African country for the three seats allotted to Africa on the Council as a result of the AU endorsement, ensuring a clean slate for Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone’s quest for the UNSC is guided by a defined vision that focuses on seven key issues. This strategy will focus on priorities that will help to support, strengthen, and address the following:
1: Partnership and representation in the maintenance of peace and security,
2: Peace-making and peacebuilding,
3: Human rights and accountability,
4: Women and youth in peace and security,
5: Terrorism and new threats to peace (climate change and human security),
6: Small arms control and
7: Security Council reform
