The Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE), along with the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, commemorated the historic International Family Day 2026 in Freetown.

This is the first time Sierra Leone is officially commemorating this important day since its UN declaration in 1993.

During the morning period, on Saturday 16 May 2026, many citizens turned up with their families for a Family Health Walk from Aberdeen Roundabout to the SOS Hermann Gmeiner International School in the west of the capital, Freetown.

Some key participants in the walk include Information Minister, Chernor Bah, and Social Welfare Minister, Melrose Karminty and other Cabinet colleagues. The ministers and other participants walked shoulder-to-shoulder with the public to champion family cohesion, health and child wellbeing.

‘’It was nice seeing so many families walking together today, this will motivates even more family gatherings and meaningful conversations across our communities.’’ Minister stated.

He reminded everyone of the power of intentional parenting. He proudly reaffirmed his stance as a proud feminist, sharing his personal commitment to raising his sons to deeply respect women. He urged every Sierra Leonean to be present and active in their homes, emphasising that healthy, nurtured families form the absolute foundation for national development and social cohesion.

At the end of the walk, participants signed a symbolic Commitment Wall, pledging personal actions to protect children, such as ending child marriage and stopping domestic violence in the country.
