Members of Parliament from Sierra Leone’s ruling party have rallied in support of President Julius Maada Bio, emphasizing his achievements and resilience during a tumultuous first term marked by significant challenges.

Speaking in Parliament, Kailahun District MP Hon. Hindolo Ngevao highlighted events that disrupted Bio’s administration, including the August 10, 2022 protests and an alleged coup attempt on November 26, which, he said, contributed to a challenging governance environment over the past five years.

Hon. Ngevao hailed President Bio as “the most progressive President in Africa” and praised his perseverance through adversity. He urged Sierra Leoneans to allow the President to carry out his agenda without interference, stressing that “violence never builds a nation” and calling for a unified effort to support development.

Backing Ngevao’s sentiments, Hon. Simeon Johnny, MP for Kono District, highlighted advancements in healthcare and education under Bio’s leadership. Johnny noted that Sierra Leone now exports healthcare workers to other countries as expatriates, signaling what he described as an improved standard in medical training and expertise. He argued that these developments underscore President Bio’s commitment to transforming the nation’s health sector.

Responding to criticism over President Bio’s foreign travel, Johnny asserted that these trips have yielded significant outcomes, citing the U.S.-backed $480 million Millennium Challenge Corporation compact and ongoing rehabilitation of the Magburaka Government Secondary School. He commended the administration’s efforts to boost the nation’s economy and infrastructure through international partnerships.

Kailahun District MP Hon. Emilia Lolloh Tongi echoed her colleagues’ support, defending the President’s track record and cautioning the opposition against unfair criticism. She lauded the work of First Lady Fatima Bio, whose “Hands Off Our Girls” campaign, aimed at protecting and empowering girls, has reportedly increased educational success rates and self-reliance among young women. The campaign also included the distribution of sanitary pads to support female students.

The MPs concluded by urging opposition members to acknowledge Bio’s achievements honestly, asserting that his administration has set the country on a trajectory of sustainable growth and development.
