The Sierra Leone passport has slipped one position in the 2025 Henley Global Passport Index, ranking 76th out of 199 countries. This represents a slight decline from its 75th position in 2024.

The index, compiled by Henley & Partners, a leading global citizenship and residence advisory firm, ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without prior visa requirements.

According to the index, the Sierra Leone passport currently grants visa-free access to 66 destinations worldwide, including countries in Africa, the Caribbean, and Asia.

Globally, Singapore boasts the most powerful passport, allowing entry to 195 countries, followed by Japan with access to 193. Finland, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea and Spain share the 3rd position with visa-free access to 192 countries.

Within Africa, Seychelles holds the top spot and 25th globally with visa-free access to 156 countries. Mauritius’s passport is ranked second in Africa and ranked 29th globally with access to 151 countries. South Africa is third in Africa and ranked 48th in the world with access to travel to 106 countries. Botswana is ranked fourth in Africa and rated 57 all over the world with access to 88 countries without paying for a visa.

Sierra Leone ranks 19th among African countries, surpassing its neighbors Liberia and Guinea.

Countries with the least powerful passports in Africa include South Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Eritrea, Sudan, and Nigeria.
