Ghanaian vlogger Wode Maya has called on Sierra Leoneans to remain positive and act as ambassadors for their country, saying tourism in Sierra Leone can benefit everyone if citizens believe in their nation despite the challenges.
He made this statement during his second visit to the country, organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs as part of the 2025 Year of Ecotourism campaign. The campaign focuses on promoting community-based tourism, cultural appreciation, and environmental conservation.
Wode Maya, who is from Ahekofi, Kofikrom in the Western Region of Ghana, is known across Africa for his video storytelling and efforts to promote the continent’s image through travel content.
During his recent visit, he toured historic and natural sites including Leicester Peak, Bunce Island, Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Tokeh Beach, Estuary Resort, and Mozza Resort. He also interacted with local creatives, entrepreneurs, and members of Sierra Leone’s tourism sector.
On 26th April 2025, he joined Minister Nabeela Farida Tunis at the Freetown International Airport to witness the launch of the Air Sierra Leone flight from London to Freetown. Wode Maya said the airport had seen many changes since his first visit in 2019.
He noted several improvements including better roads, faster ferry transport, and the rise of new resorts along the Freetown Peninsula. Areas like River No. 2 Beach and Leicester Peak, which once had limited access, are now easier to reach and seeing new development.
At Leicester Peak, he visited a viewpoint project under construction, part of a tourism development plan supported by the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLEDP). He described how different the area looked compared to six years ago.
“When I came in 2019, the potential was there but the structures were not,” he said. “Now I can see real development. If each and every Sierra Leonean, despite the challenges, can stay positive and be ambassadors for their country, trust me tourism in this country will be beneficial for everyone.”
Wode Maya also received a traditional outfit from Mumini Fashion and continues to document his journey across Sierra Leone, sharing his experiences with a global audience and encouraging African unity through storytelling.
