The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has issued a directive requiring airlines to refund passengers who were charged increased taxes and fees between September 6 and October 18, 2023, for flights departing on or after December 1, 2023.
The SLCAA has instructed airlines to contact affected passengers directly to provide them with details on the refund process.
The authority’s decision stems from concerns that the increased taxes and fees were not adequately communicated to passengers prior to their bookings. The SLCAA aims to ensure that passengers are not unfairly burdened by these additional charges.
In addition to issuing refunds, the SLCAA has also urged airlines to clearly communicate any changes in taxes and fees to passengers well in advance of their bookings. This will help to avoid similar situations in the future.
The SLCAA’s actions demonstrate its commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring transparency in the aviation industry. The authority’s decision will provide relief to passengers who were affected by the recent tax increase and will help to maintain public trust in the aviation sector.
