On Tuesday April 9, the Ministry of Social Welfare, together with the Chinese Embassy in Freetown, distributed food items to local Muslim organizations as a post-Ramadan gesture.
The ceremony took place at the Ministry’s Conference Hall in New England Village, Freetown. The donation included 300 bags of 25kg rice, 20 gallons of cooking oil, and 20 bags of 50kg sugar, all provided by the Chinese Embassy in support of the Muslim community.
Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, acknowledged that the donation arrived after Ramadan, but emphasized that it was still a timely and meaningful contribution. She thanked the Chinese government for its ongoing support for Sierra Leone’s Muslim community.
Representatives from five key Muslim organizations attended the event, including the Supreme Islamic Council, Sierra Leone Muslim Congress, United Council of Imams, Inter-Religious Council, and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Organization.
Alhaji Momodu of the Inter-Religious Council praised the continued relationship between Sierra Leone and China, assuring that the items would be distributed fairly across the country. Alhaji Ibrahim Cole from the Sierra Leone Muslim Congress expressed gratitude for the Embassy’s consistent annual donations. Alhaji K. K. Bangura from the Supreme Islamic Council also offered prayers for stronger ties between the two nations.
Minister Karminty called on the recipient organizations to ensure the transparent distribution of the items, requesting them to provide photographic evidence of the handovers to the beneficiaries nationwide.
