Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, welcomed an eight-member team of Spanish doctors from the Surgeons in Action Foundation on Monday, April 29, 2024. This foundation, based in Spain, arrived in Sierra Leone at the invitation of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to perform free surgical operations on 140 pre-registered patients at the Sierra Leone Police Hospital in Kingtom.

Dr. John Mumuneh Konteh, the SLP’s Medical Superintendent and Deputy Director of Medical Services, expressed gratitude for the team’s dedication to supporting the Sierra Leone Police. Over 480 individuals applied for surgical assistance, highlighting the overwhelming need for such medical interventions. However, only 140 patients were selected for the initial surgeries, which will be performed at the Kingtom Police Hospital.

Ana Mi Gdy Fdez, the team lead, conveyed her team’s pleasure in partnering with the SLP and serving the community. She announced plans for future visits to undertake additional surgeries, demonstrating the long-term commitment of Surgeons in Action Foundation to Sierra Leone.

Inspector General Sellu commended the team for their support, emphasizing the significance of their partnership in providing essential medical services. He recalled previous engagements with similar medical teams and highlighted the financial burden that surgical procedures often impose on individuals in need. He expressed gratitude for the free surgeries provided to police personnel, their dependents, and the wider community.

Sellu underscored the importance of ongoing collaboration to address the welfare and medical needs of police personnel and their families. He praised the team’s initiative in covering their own travel expenses as a testament to their commitment and synergy with the SLP.

Furthermore, Sellu ensured that all necessary protocols were followed by obtaining authorization clearance from the Medical and Dental Council of Sierra Leone. He presented the clearance to the team lead, affirming the legality and compliance of their medical mission.

Sellu extended well wishes to the visiting team and pledged to visit them during their operations. The partnership between the Surgeons in Action Foundation and the Sierra Leone Police represents a vital step towards improving healthcare accessibility and enhancing the well-being of the community.
