The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Segepoh Solomon Thomas, on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, expressed gratitude for the resumption of duty by Opposition Members of Parliament, describing their return as a significant step in fulfilling their national mandate.

Addressing the House, the Speaker said he felt proud of the Opposition for taking their seats once again, emphasising that they were elected by the people and have a responsibility to serve their constituents. He encouraged them to remain steadfast in their duties, stressing that nothing should hinder them from representing the interests of their people.

“Please use the Well of Parliament as an open space to advocate for your people,” the Speaker urged, underscoring the importance of constructive engagement in addressing national issues.

Leader of the Opposition, Abdul Kargbo, in his response, commended the Speaker for his pivotal role in facilitating the Opposition’s return to Parliament. He disclosed that the Speaker held several meetings with Opposition MPs, persistently appealing for their return in the interest of national stability.

Hon. Kargbo further revealed that the Speaker also facilitated a crucial meeting between the Opposition and the President, which he described as productive and instrumental in resolving the political impasse.

“So, as the Opposition, we want to express our thanks and appreciation for the role you played, Mr Speaker. We also thank you for serving as the conduit that enabled us to meet with the President. You facilitated a very productive meeting. You have shown exemplary leadership, for which we will remain grateful,” he stated.

The Opposition Leader, however, emphasised the need for commitments outlined in the Communiqué that led to their return to be honoured. Key among these, he noted, are the laying of the Agreement for National Unity in Parliament and the establishment of a committee to oversee the Elections Management Body.

In his response, the Speaker acknowledged the concerns raised and assured the House that the matters would be addressed. He explained that Leaders of Government Business are currently engaged in official duties at various international parliamentary engagements, but pledged that necessary actions would be taken upon their return.

The development marks a renewed commitment to dialogue and parliamentary engagement, signalling progress toward resolving political differences in the country.
