On Monday, July 29, 2024, the Teaching Service Commission of Sierra Leone unveiled the fourth edition of the National Presidential Teacher’s Awards at its conference room on Pricilla Street, Freetown. The event marks a significant occasion in recognizing exceptional educators across the country.

Deputy Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education, Emily Gogra, emphasized that nominations for the awards are open to all trained and qualified teachers throughout Sierra Leone, including those in remote areas. She praised the transparent and inclusive approach of the nomination process and acknowledged the efforts of the Teaching Service Commission Chairman.

Acting Secretary General of the Teaching Service Commission, Edwin Kpana Massaquoi, highlighted the continued success of the awards, which have been celebrated annually for the past three years. Scheduled for October 5, the awards ceremony will take place in Bo City, with President Julius Maada Bio serving as the keynote speaker and guest of honor.

Massaquoi provided an overview of the various awards categories, which include district and regional recognitions for pre-primary, primary, and secondary school teachers, as well as special awards such as the lifetime achievement award, innovative teaching award, and community impact award. Recipients will be selected through a rigorous evaluation process involving self and peer nominations, feedback from students and the community, and assessments by a diverse panel of experts.

Each award winner will receive commemorative trophies, cash prizes, and national recognition for their contributions to education. Massaquoi assured that the process will remain transparent and impactful, continuing the tradition of celebrating and supporting excellence in teaching.
